Probably quite a few, most sold on ebay were sold as replacement/self fit boxes and not illegal otherwise ebay would have stripped them off faster than the VM complaints...
It'll be interesting as to how many there actually are out there

Had something like at a company I used to work for. Guy phoned up 'cos the computer he'd bought from a chap down the pub didn't work. It was actually a customised computer terminal that we'd supplied to DHSS benefit offices. The slot the floppy disc wouldn't go into was in fact an ID card reader. Took his contact info and passed it onto my opposite number at the DHSS. Oddly, the guy never called back.

all the ones virgin media etc didnt bother to pick up after accounts were closed. As I have said before modified official cable boxes the blame purely has to land at their own door . If they were picked up they wouldnt be modified. Starview dBox Eurovox etc are different but all modded boxes are their own fault

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
Some 3rd boxes will have a life afterwords as the DVB-C units can be removed and a DVB-T or DVB-S unit can be installed.. So basically it's £100+ per unit then another £50+ for the DVB-S/DVB-T card for a freeview/freesat reciever that could have got at half the price ...

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
yeah but a lot of people have been saving £30 a month for a number of years so £100 outlay 2 years saving £30 a month = £720 - the £50 for modding it to freesat = £570 in pocket

Re: Virgin media possibly getting serious on dodgy boxes?
That though is a whole other argument as to why VM didn;t do this earlier

It's debatable whether they have really been 'saving' £30 per month. Many of the cable TV thieves wouldn't have paid for the extra channels anyway, if they hadn't been able to get them for nothing they wouldn't have subscribed to get them for a payment. That is the very same self-serving argument many of them used to justify their fraud - that VM was actually benefiting, because they were getting a basic sub rather than no sub at all.
I suspect the thought that they have 'saved' a few hundred quid will be cold comfort to the fraudsters and the thought of paying out £100 to mod their box to make it work with DVB-T or -S will cause a nice big lump to stick in their throats.
