Virgin Media launches malware defence campaign

Virgin Media have said in a press release today that they intend to take a proactive stance to protect its customers from the growing threat of ‘Malware’. Malware infections can compromise a computers security by installing Viruses, Spyware and Trojans, which can allow a hacker to steal Credit Card information and other personal data stored on the computer. According to Virgin Media’s Digital Home Support team, a quarter of customers asking for help, had computer or speed issues caused by malware infections.

According to a OFCOM report, the UK is being ‘misled’ on broadband speeds, according to OFCOM’s analysis of broadband speeds in the UK shows that, for some services, provided by multiple large providers such as BT and Virgin Media, 97% of consumers do not get the advertised speed.

Satellite company, BSKYB, has bought Virgin Media owned TV channels such as Virgin1, Bravo and Living, in a deal worth around £160 Million. The deal which includes seven channels will now mean Sky no longer has to pay carriage fees to Virgin Media. However, as part of what appears to be a mixed bag of deals, Virgin Media will be given the privilege of carrying any of Sky’s basic HD channels such as, Sky Sports HD 1 and Sky Sports HD 2 – all Sky Movies HD channels for an incremental wholesale fee.

Virgin Media is proceeding with a smart card update across Scotland later this month in an attempt to cut down on dodgy TV boxes which provide free viewing to owners, according to a report today in the Edinburgh Evening News. This will involve the replacement of all smart cards in set-top boxes across Scotland.

Virgin Media have announced today that their cable digital TV customers will be able to watch this years World Cup in full High Definition as the ITV1 HD channel joins Virgin Media’s TV line-up on April 2nd. All matches in this years World Cup will be shown on ITV1 HD or the BBC’s HD channel.

Cable Forum has acquired cablehell.co.uk, a move which will now further our goals of being a site of one of it’s kind, a large, dedicated, independant Virgin Media customer support and community forum. The former owner of Cablehell approached the Cable Forum Team last week and offered to transfer control of the Cablehell.co.uk domain to us. The offer also included a copy of the Cablehell database. After careful consideration we accepted the offer. However, we have yet to decide if we will salvage and or use data from the Cablehell’s forum database.

Virgin Media reported its 4th Quarter results today that revealed an additional 63,600 broadband customers and 56,900 new TV customers. In addition the uptake of the V+ PVR kept growing with in excess of 100,000 new subscribers over the quarter and churn declined to 1.2% in the final quarter.
